I was fortunate (once again) in the spring of 2024 to be able to get to get away for a European vacation of a few weeks in between the rest of the stuff of life. The highlight was meeting up with Alexandre in Lisbon (we hadn't seen him since the Christmas season). Here's what the first 36 hours looked like as a family. Everything iPhone with a flavouring of Photoshop.

Diane and I overnighted in Paris then flew Air France to Lisbon. Alexandre's route was Kelowna-Calgary-Amsterdam-Lisbon in one long day.

Alexandre arrived before us and was staying in a nearby hotel. This was our first sight of Alexandre since Christmas. From our balcony.

On our hotel room's balcony

The city was decorated with the purple blossoms of the Jacaranda trees. Unique in Europe to Lisbon, it seems, the trees were introduced from Brazil in the early 19th century. Luckily for us, May is the month they blossom.

A highlight feature of Lisbon is its collection of colourful buildings.

Tourists and their selfies! Taken at the closest thing Lisbon has to an Eiffel Tower: a 19th century elevator in a tower, connecting one level of Lisbon with another, which made it easier for Lisboans (?) to navigate the hills the city is famous for. A good idea 150 years ago, but today tourists wait in line  for 45 minutes for a one-minute ascent.

Chatting with the guide on our walking tour of historic Lisbon.

We like to make sure than Alexandre's sunglasses go with my outfit.

Colours of Lisbon

"Share the Magic. Share the Flavour. Coca Cola"

Lisbon is paved with these small squares of stone in black and white, sometimes arranged in patterns creating optical illusions. This paving is irregular and bumpy; can be difficult to walk on and jarring to drive over.

An example of the innumerable stairs of Lisbon.
